The Mindset That Guarantees Failure in Weight Loss

Find me on:

Mindset for Weight LossIt has been a long time since I have written an opinion based article. For several years I have remained behind layers of evidence based sources. However, after a couple of conversations with my clients this week, and having worked with a considerable amount of high-risk clients over the last few years, I have noticed some issues with mindsets that clients start their programs with.

It has got to the point where I am almost able to tell who will make it past the 6 month mark, primarily by understanding the mindset the client has in their consultation. I want to share this with you so that you can potentially change your mindset, allowing you to make it past the 6 month mark in any weight loss or health program you follow.

When I first started I wanted the clients that gave me the quick transformations. The “I want change and I want it now type” they follow all of your nutrition advice, smash their sessions and get weight loss results fast; then they crash and burn out. Despite getting their results, they then go on the  holiday they were aiming for and completely trash their body again, and because they aren't on holiday again until next year, they disappear until january. They leave an awesome review but they remain unhappy until next year then repeat the same thing.

Nowadays there is a different type of client that I seek and it isn’t obvious at all. As I was developing from the early days I found a very similar type of client to my ideal type, but slightly different. The difference causes a profound change in that, depending on which variation of this client I get, they will either last for years or they will have left within 6 months.

I will now describe the two client types to you and you can have a guess which one I prefer.

Client type 1:

  • Client is uneasy with how they are living now
  • Client is inactive but wants to change this
  • Client has several on-coming or established disease factors
  • Client is willing to accept help and guidance
  • Client is displaying NEED to change not want
  • Client is highly motivated
  • Client will do what it takes to get weight loss results now
  • Client shows High Drive to see aesthetic results now

Client type 2:

  • Client is uneasy with how they are living now
  • Client is inactive but wants to change this
  • Client has several on-coming or established disease factors
  • Client is willing to accept help and guidance
  • Client is displaying NEED to change not want
  • Client is highly motivated
  • Client wants to change lifestyle to improve quality of life
  • Client happy to make small changes over time

Which one is going to make it past 6 months? It all comes down to two bullet points and what they tell me:

Client 1:

  • Client will do what it takes to get results now
  • Client shows High Drive to see aesthetic results now

BURNOUT!

Client 2:

  • Client wants to change lifestyle to improve quality of life
  • Client happy to make small changes over time.

Long Term Sustainable Change!

A very subtle difference that makes a huge difference to the end result.

Client 1 will work themselves to the bone for the next 6 months. They will 100% deserve the results they are after, but many of them will have done serious damage to themselves in the years proceeding, causing huge imperfections in their daily routine and health. These can't be cured with a quick fix and will 100% cause the rate of results to decrease until they are sorted. This weight loss plateau will cause the client to lose motivation out of frustration and no amount of managing expectations will help. The client is fixated on what they THINK they should have achieved by now, rather than what they have actually achieved.

Client 2 knows they need to achieve but doesn’t have the same “Instant gratification” requirement Client 1 has. The fact that they are doing something is the result. They are happy to take the small wins and to get healthier step by step and are in it for the journey not the aesthetics. They appreciate they have a long way to go but are also aware that as long as they are continuing, they are chipping away at it. This is the mindset of some of my longest standing clients!

This is not just a matter of me not having to provide results and getting long term clients. These clients still have short term goals but they are less about looking like Thor and more centred on quality of life, being able to start new hobbies, enjoying the time they have.

Invariably the stop start of Client 1 means that they will be in a perpetual cycle of flux between being in and out of exercise. Client 2 will end up with a steady improvement of health and stable lifestyle with exercise and nutrition as a standard within it.
